I hope this fails miserably. If subscription based car features ever become mainstream, we can all thank the idiot BMW drivers who made it possible.

If you can afford a BMW $18 isn't shit to you and if you can drop in and out of the subscription, you wouldn't be subscribed during months where you don't use it, further reducing the cost. The real test will be when it gets to mass market auto producers for the 15-35k vehicle price point.

I think I read Toyota was doing the same thing with remote start.

Yes they did. I tried to subscribe during the free trail period but the smart app sucked! It required you to allow them to send you push messages and to monitor all your car's telemetry. If you disabled anything, nothing worked. The car annoyed me constantly telling me, "your car started", "your car stopped", "your car is now at....", it's time for service, your windows are up/down.

I couldn't fucking stand it so I had to literally call Toyota and ask them to revoke all the permissions I gave them and to cancel the service. If only the app simply started the car remotely, I may have paid. No, you got so much more than you ever wanted.

And they're still recording your car's telemetry in the background.

Yea, very likely, but I withdrew my permission to do it, in any event.

Same shit with the Tesla. My buddy bought one and in order to “unlock” certain features you pay Tesla for software/firmware updates even though all of the hardware is included. I think he mentioned he had to pay extra for increased acceleration and also rapid battery charge.

What's even worse, you pay Tesla to turn on all the features you want. Later, you sell the car thinking the new owner can enjoy all the features you bought and paid for.... woa! Nope all the enabled features you bought are disabled so the next owner can buy them all over again.

I think it's clear that I will never buy a modern car again.

well, bmw has created another stupid tax. I hope the stupid people pay it and their dollars are quickly removed from their hands.

I don't like heated seats. I was a passenger the first time I experienced them. My first thought was, oh shit, I just pissed myself...

BMW is so overrated.
