Now that you mention it, I've never liked this either. It sort of infantilizes the act of sex. When I was a kid, this is how "sex scenes" in movies were explained to me.
But on a show like this, which appears to be something like a British "Maury" or "Jerry Springer", daytime TV for ADULTS, why not just say "Had sex with 40 men?" Sleeping with someone implies you spent the night after sex. Somehow, I don't think she'd have time to sleep with 40 different men and have sex with them all in less than 24 hours.
