This is an op.

Here’s how it will go:

The crew will cooperate fully - because this was all planned in advance. They’ll plea bargain and get very light sentences, and even get “thanked” for their patience, cooperation, and understanding about the importance of the “sanctity of Congress.”

Colbert will then do this monologue:

“I’d like to take a moment as an aside to thank the members of Congress, the DC police, and my own staff for how they’ve handled themselves following the misunderstanding that happened a short while back.

“For those of you unaware, and congratulate yourself for not being an Alex Jones fan, if you aren’t, some members of my staff made a teensy weensy error in judgement by accidentally breaching national security. Yes, we can all laugh now at a group of comedians who got mixed up and went to the wrong place at the wrong time, but it isn’t a laughing matter.

“My staff, who made an honest mistake, have handled themselves with aplomb. The DC police have shown themselves to be amicable and respectful. Heck, even Congress has done a great job at ensuring things were handled fairly and evenly, thanks to the cooperation of my people.

“Unfortunately, a group of fun loving goofballs isn’t who Congress has to be concerned with. My little crew of lovable nobodies has shown how good people who enter a federal building while unauthorized are supposed to respond - with humility and respect.

“Meanwhile, those terrorists who entered the building on January 6, under orders from Donald Trump, with the intention to harm our democracy, continue to refuse to cooperate and acknowledge. It’s taken over a year and a half! They still haven’t figured it out. Haha.

“Allow us at the Late Show to offer up a quick guide to help you understand what to do: first, admit you’re wrong, second, be brave enough to face your consequences, and third, remember, this isn’t your fault, it’s Trump’s.”
