Just FYI often on public Wi-Fi I can't get to poal but I'm still able to using Opera with its data saver that routes data through their servers. This has been useful in the past when going to gun websites to check about ammo while in the store, where the store Wi-Fi blocks it.

Naturally they're Chinese so they're monitoring everything but who isn't these days? They get the least criticism here these days anyway.

That's essentially a vpn. That doesn't sound very secure uploading your browsing data/history/habits to operas servers. But everyone has their own opinions on opsec i guess.

Yes, that is the issue at hand. I have heard arguments that you are no more secure using a VPN than not using one because you have no guarantee they aren't tracking you. Here's the thing about that argument: while true you are now trusting only one entity with your data as opposed to hoping ALL the others don't track it. You've gone from one point of failure and one corp to trust versus many.
