I found this fascinating. I've always heard of Machiavelli but never actually read any of his works, least of all his best known treatise, The Prince. This YT video does a good job summarizing it. You can see some of the parallels with today's politicians. Especially prescient is the section (closer to the end) on using Fear versus Love to control your subjects.
