The "housing crisis" is a propaganda tool by California politicians to deflect blame for their failed policies. They claim that homelessness, crime, and lack of affordability are due to a housing shortage so they can deflect the blame to local governments. The reality is that in 2020, California had more housing per 100,000 population than it had in 19601 2.
This false narrative serves a double purpose in totalitarian California. All those communist state legislators receive millions of dollars from unions and the real estate industry. Those legislators turn around and make legislation to force local cities to approve massive developments that line the pockets of developers and construction workers' unions.
In 1960, California had 5,465,870 housing units (www2.census.gov) and a population of 15,717,204 (www2.census.gov). That makes 34,776 housing units per 100,000 population.
In 2020, California had 14,383,358 housing units (www2.census.gov) and a population of 39,538,223. (census.gov) That makes 36,378 housing units per 100,000 population.
