For some, it has the opposing effect, they saw themselves as an intellectual elite because of their ability to openly express their belief in absurd and contradictory ideas, it was a great source of pride for them to boast about how many impossible things they beleived in, the less sense their beliefs had to them, the more intelligent they must be to grasp the complexities that less enlightened folk failed to realize.
Their only greater delight was to lecture the doubters about how wrong or stupid they were for failing to leap this hurdle of treating insanities as of they were evidently true by common sense, and then try to explain their ridiculous mental acrobatics in order to convince the poor fool that their laughably nonsensical ideas were perfectly sane.
It was obviously the truth to anyone who just had the sufficient intellectual to grasp the complexities of the false pronouncements of self serving tyrants.
The tyrants, on the other hand, were as equally delighted in making their pseudointellectuals regurgitate absurdities with an undue sense of pride, as these intellectuals has enjoyed themselves in doing so.
The tyrants couldn't be bothered to justify their nonsense with overly creative use of rhetoric, thet had the power to shut down any who would claim their proclamations for the transparent lies that they were.
The tyrants have no interest in making any sense, in fact, they had themselves taken great pleasure in having the absolute power to manipulate the minds of their people with impunity, and in abusing that power to the fullest.
Reminds me a little bit of bad abstract art. If you state the obvious: it looks like a child made it, you are belittled for not getting it.
Thus people and scam artists pretend to see all kind of complexities in those child paintings.
Most are literally made at random just to be used as a prop for laundering money and tax evasion.
