I guarantee there's an addiction aspect.

My God, it's the perfect business. The best possible way to control people, while simultaneously taking all their money.

I first noticed the effect of movies when I realized that most people don't know much about guns, and what they do know comes from movies. They expect people to fly back when they get shot and other tropes that are pervasive in Hollywood that have no basis in reality. The more movies people watch, and the less real experiences people have, the more of their intuition about the world comes from movies. These are thoughts, feelings and instincts that one is unable to question because one isn't even aware of their existence--they are part of who you are on a fundamental level. This is how they are programmed and why they act like NPCs. They have literally been programmed to respond in a certain, predictable way to certain stimuli, and they pay to have it done to them.
