When you listen to this, bear in mind, these were the ideals taught in the schools to white Christian schoolboys during the Victorian Age, when Kipling was alive. He didn't invent this philosophy or these teachings, this was the current goal of all English gentlemen of his day, when the British Empire stretched around the world. This is what they were taught to aspire to, and this is what most of them made a sincere effort to achieve.
It's so far removed from the mindset of people in England, or America, these days, that they probably can't even conceive of it being the norm. They can't comprehend that, 150 years ago, educated Christians believed very different things from what they believe. Or that those people could be so much superior to what they are today.
