I always carry a knife. I chose a knife that is assisted-opening, which I can flick open with one hand reliably. The blade is 3 1/2 inches, which is about as large as you can make a folding knife and still expect it to fit into your pocket. It's a lockblade of course -- never carry a folding knife that doesn't lock open. I prefer a liner lock because of the clean look and positive action. I adjust the pivot of the blade regularly and oil it. It's an excellent thing to have in your pocket if you should happen to run into some "wild animals" on a dark night.
