I can't stay focused on learning to play the guitar. Really pissing me off. You don't realize it until you realize you can't stay focused on one thing for more than a few minutes- if that- And no I'm too poor to afford real teaching lessons.

Mine is too destroyed to read books. I’m an embarrassment to my child self.

Listen to audio books. Science fiction short stories before bed. Start with sub-half hour stories. Plenty of good ones.

[–] 2 pts

I read the books before going to sleep. Set a time. No tv no phone. Book… sleep. Helps calm the mind.

[–] 2 pts

The only issue with this is that it trains you to be tired when you read; not so good when you get tired in the middle of the day because you had to read something more than a few pages long

Do you think this will have any cognitive benefit or just a way of passing time?

Where do you recommend I search?

[–] 1 pt

there's studies showing. theres not much difference.

entertainment I'll listen to books, but anything I actually want to retain I read the physical book so I can still make notes.

audible has had to audio book market as a monopoly for many years. theres a few smaller ones just popping up like Chirp. your local library, full audio books on You Tube or torrenting somewhere.

Reverting to mummy and daddy reading bed time stories is not the answer.

[–] 5 pts

It is a way to re-train your mind into wanting/being interested in longer-form content.

Same here, it's hard to bother reading paragraphs for me. I never liked books, but sometimes if I found a good one that is less than 150 pages, I'd love it. I never got into huge books with a series. I like small ones like boxcar children and hatchet.

It's sad that quick and useless information, paired with years of fast ads and videos, can wreck attention spans.

Put them in the bathroom.

Best study tip I ever learned.

[–] 11 pts

I suspect some of it is because its all meaningless unless some big problems get corrected.

Its hard to focus on small things when an elephant is ripping away the house.

[–] 4 pts

can be an explanation. im in the same bed as OP, I cannot be interested in anything. nothing excited me and I have trouble staying focused. i dont trust anything anymore either, it's just sad.

You are not alone.

[–] 1 pt

i know and thats what makes me feel better. we are many in this case and its not our fault

It isn't the internet.

It's Satan. Hear me out.

Your issue is rooted in hedonism. You can only strive for instant pleasure. Delayed pleasure or the pain of struggling to learn something new is beyond you and billions more.

Behind hedonism is temptation for deadly sins. Sloth. Greed. Envy. Gluttony. Lust.

All you care about is the next hit of pleasure. Anything else is undesirable to you.

This has come about because Satan has been sending the compulsions known as temptations to you your entire life.

BTW temptation is a religious term subverted in mainstream use.

And your spirit I'm betting is undefended

[–] 3 pts

Damn Satan always trying to... entertain us, and shit! What's wrong with that guy?

[–] 1 pt

...psst! hey!(shhh). [your prolapse is showing]

[–] 1 pt

Oops, I wore that jock backward to keep everything packed up in there... guess I need to buy a bigger cup size?

[–] 0 pt

Go spend all your energy and time on porn. Feel that instant pleasure... Sure beats pursuing a future loving, child rearing wife right?

You need to learn the Evil behind hedonism before it's too late

I played guitar for years, wrote a few songs. It occupied a decade of my life but it never improved it long term.
Music is a beautiful hobby but only a very few will make a living with it, and that is more tied into image and 'marketability' than talent or money in your pocket.
Personally I don't bother with therapists, I have an old acoustic in the shed for that.

[–] 0 pt

Forget music. Hedonism blocks every new skill.

At some point learning hits a hard point and that hurts. Hedonist give up to instead go on to get an easy pleasure hit.

Hedonists never complete anything. It's a primary symptom

While I don't appreciate the Christcuckery, the underlying logic is sound.

Take the sprititualism out of it if you must.

Satan can be the manisfestion of mass psychosis.

And the Bible was our ancestors warning to us.

Either way Armour yourself.

Same... I find it impossible tomorrow focus at work.

Doesn't help that work has become dull, repetitive, and dead end feeling.

I, toomorrow, find it impossible tomorrow focus at work

Me, asswell, find it impossible tomorrow focus at work

[–] 1 pt

you're not alone. i and many others feel the same as you. it is not your fault and do not blame yourself. understanding this is not your fault and its out of your control should already make you feel better. the world has gone insane and it's not a sign of intelligence to live your life as if nothing is happening, so you should be proud to find yourself in your position.

[–] 0 pt

No no no no.. taking responsibility for yourself and actions is the only solution and way foresrdm don't blame the world. Or Satan or anything else. You can't focus because you haven't put in the work required to focus. You don't have the results you want because you haven't taken the prerequisite steps to achieve it. That's not on anyone else but you. I understand your dilemma. Abd that alot of other people share it. But. Just like you got yourself in that situation. You're aware of the situation and that's the first step to getting yourself out of it. Don't sit by blaming everyone else. Take responsibility for yourself. Abd continue to work on solving your problem. You're already on the right track. Good luck.

Buy a dumbell. When you can't focus do curls and over heads.

It helps and at least gets you in better shape.

Get some bloodwork done. Check your thyroid. Seriously, happened to me and I had to get that bugger moving again to correct the problem.

[–] 1 pt

How'd you get it moving again?

You'll have to buy his book to find out.

We can give you a cosmetic skin

I notice this when I am fishing.

Fishing requires a lot of patience.

It's easier in the boat where I can follow the sonar readout:)

Shore fishing is harder. Bringing a radio helps though.

I find that doing chores at home helps to break up this attention pattern.

Stuff like mowing the lawn. Just turn the computer off and get out there.

Also reading books. Books are like movies, but slower and more detailed.

Glad to know there's book lovers here in poalville...Fishing sounds so awesome...

It's like zen, but with fish:)

I'd highly recommend reading/listening to the book Atomic Habits. Title is kinda gay, but the author explains why the title is gay and gives some really good advice in the process

[–] 4 pts

Explained gay is better than unexplained gay.

[–] 0 pt

Explained gay

"I was molested as a child".

Schedule the work. The internet didn't ruin your attention span, YOU did by the habits you took on. If you want to do something, schedule it as if it were work. Do only that item for a set amount of time. You have a cellphone with a timer. Use the timer. Do ten minutes per day for a week, then schedule it for 20 minutes per day for a week or two, then 30 minutes for a few week. You get the point. Treat the whole thing as if it were your part-time job.

You're ultimately, the boss of you! Don't brush that off by blaming "the internet", anything or, anyone else.

[–] 0 pt

Yes. Same goes for writing. Treat it as a job, with defined start/end times.

Not just you- it's everyone. You start to notice when everyone interrupts all the time. No one has an attention span anymore.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah? Same here (about the attention span). How are you learning to play guitar?
