Okay, I'm with ya.
My girlfriend and I occasionally like to watch some of those ridiculous ghost shows on the travel channel, just to make fun of it. Ghost Adventures is probably the absolute worst- but in that "good way". It's like... The Room of ghost hunting shows, so phenomenally awful that it loops back around and becomes inadvertently entertaining.
I've done the "ghost hunt" shit in my teens. Going to old abandoned, allegedly haunted places at night time. I've even been to Centralia, the place which Silent Hill is based on- a state police officer spotted us and shooed us away quickly because it's really fucking dangerous there. Everything that happens is just your mind filling in the blanks. You hear a twig snap outside- the rational conclusion is "deer, fox, or any number of animals passing through". But if you're there looking for ghosts, your mind will fill in "DAT'S A FUKIN' GHOOOST OUT THERE MAN!!!" And if you're in a group of "believers", your hysteria will feed off one another.
My friend actually got us like this once: we went to an abandoned asylum, very famous on the east coast for allegedly being super haunted, lots of horrible shit went on in there when it was open. We snuck in there, and this skeptical friend, we'll call him Pat, suddenly goes "Did you guys hear that?!" The other four of us didn't hear anything. "No, what?" "I don't know, like... a voice." This set us on edge. If I was paying closer attention, I might have caught Pat's amusement on his face.
We go deeper into the asylum, it's spooky as shit. Dark isn't a strong enough word. The way sound carries in this place can make a simple coin drop sound like some eldritch wail across the building. Pat again says "I heard it again, did you hear that!?" The only female in our group replied with "Yes, it was like a woman's voice!" Pat reaffirmed this. After another 15 minutes, we were all "hearing" this disembodied female voice... until Pat couldn't keep it together anymore, burst into laughter, said he hadn't heard shit and he was just seeing how much he could mess with us.
He convinced us that we were hearing things we weren't. Group psychology at play, along with a general atmosphere of fear and dread, and a degree of confirmation bias that surely there are ghosts here.
Most ghost hunting shows use this sort of trick with their EVP "evidence". I think it's usually fabricated, some crew member records a line, audio engineer runs it through all kinds of shit to distort it, then they play the EVP and it sounds like "Erbel filloo..........." Then they play it again, and add subtitles saying "I'm gonna kill you", and your mind will hear that as you read along and listen. One of the easiest, cheapest tricks.
This!
The EVP crap is an obvious gimmick. What the hell? It’s an untuned radio? The voice said “get out” right…
