I've had the opportunity to talk to some of the wealthiest people in the country a couple times, through work. That's about the impression that I got. They didn't seem malevolent, just arrogant and completely out of touch with how life works for the rest of us. They're success is often just a result of connections, place, and time - but they end up surrounded by people who revere them as geniuses. Eventually, even the most modest get inflated egos. When Hollywood pulls them in, they end up making stupid investments and pushing agendas to impress models, actors, and actresses. The information they're given is highly controlled by NGOs and groups with interest in getting funding, try sending something to one and you'll likely get blocked by one of these organizations. Of course, they've got the internet like anyone else - but they're time is occupied with a lot of events and meetings with these types of groups. So between the people who surround them hoping to absorb some wealth making superpower, the organizations that constantly feed them the idea that they "need" them to make important high level decisions, and the Hollywood glamour - I can see where the god complex comes from.
