The only trend I've seen regarding internet points, is those asking about them tend to have a Merchant badge.
Not sure if that's causation or correlation; just an observation.

Merchant badges are for score manipulation to my knowledge. It just occurred to me someone else could make an alt and go spam upvoting their opposition's posts to make it look like their opposition are vote manipulating, I figure most sites have enough user data to tell the difference these days though.
