What the US fought for was to enrich a small number of elite players on the world stage. The occupation of Afghanistan (it wasn't a war -- the "war" was over in a week) was beside the point. It was an excuse to funnel American tax dollars into the hands of international billionaires. There was no winning anything. The goal was to keep the occupation going. The goal was defrauding the American people.
