Great news and congrats!! i recommend IMMEDIATELY fortifying the floor border of the pen. Raccoon and weasels will DEF dig into that grass and scoot right under to go on a murder rampage, trustttt i speak from experience. For i am a raccoon and i have murdered many chickens jk but u get what im saying. Owning chickens requires a close relationship with their inevitable deaths, by ur own hand or at the hand/jaw of another creature. Also, snakes WILL slither thru anything wider than a quarter and go after those precious, nutrient-rich eggs so prepare accordingly for that too.
In fact, i'd attach a layer of chicken wire around the perimeter of the coop bottom, then add a layer of dirt and line the border with larger rock chunks. this will deter anything that tries to dig underneath the main body of the coop. While im doling out free advice, be prepred for hawks and owls snatching them up while they r roaming free. u can use clear fishing line and attach it from the top of the coop extending out to the edge of their "free range" fenced in grassy area. the birds of prey will rack their aviary nutsacks on these lines and learn NOT to fuck around to find out. your welcome, faggot. now go forth and keep up the good work!!
Thanks for those tips! If you look at the pic closely, you'll find that there's a ground hugging mesh all around the run. Time will tell how much of an obstacle this will be for the critters we have here. Foxes and martens mostly but lately also the odd raccoon. There's an automatic door that closes upon a signal from a light sensor. First night and it worked brilliantly. Hens went in at dawn and the door shut like half an hour later. In the coop they're extremely safe. Also they all have AK 47s.
im tellin u, put dirt and rocks on TOP of the mesh's excess length bc raccoons r especially strong and stubborn. they WILL lift that mesh up and let themselves in eventually. it's creepy how well they use their hands. they r like ravens/crows with their cleverness but coons got retard strength and they mean af. time will tell and u will see how they str8 up massacre the hens. we had a coon bunch up our mesh liner and use the jagged end to hook it to ahigher up mesh part and then slide under to murder 2 of our fattest, happiest hens. shit sucked, im not tellin this to u for fun, i truly want to prevent u from takin preventable losses AND i want u to make me an omelette with ur eggs! will trade ammo for breakfast lol thts not a joke either. just dont be mad whn its a box of 22LR lol oooooops
Good idea, got some large rocks handy. Yeah, raccoons are fucking monsters. Clubbed one couple weeks ago, was living under the roof and destroyed all the rock wool insulation, shit everywhere, looked like a war zone. Then it fell down through a foldable ladder. Well, he won't do that ever again. https://files.catbox.moe/jdh8h6.jpg
Props for the tips, much appreciated!
Make sure you kill all the females first, that way the roosters can take the brunt of raising the chicks. - Michelle Obama or Xiden probably.
