There is no safe place, only places that are safer.
Maybe you should try Arizona. The air is dry, good for asthma, and the winters are a joke -- you don't even need a jacket if you are from the north and know what real cold is.
I'm looking into AZ & NM too - my mom has a friend in Prescott she visited a few years back & said it's really nice with an old western vibe.
I lived in NM for about 9 years. It's a nice state, very pretty, mild winters & hot summers but if you stay in the shade it's not too bad. No blacks, mostly Hispanics. The towns that are the best to live in I would say are Santa Fe or perhaps Taos, NM depending on if you enjoy a rural area or one more built up. Great ski areas around there as well. The median age in Santa Fe is 46 though. It's pretty noticeable when you go out around town that there aren't that many young people.
I can tolerate Mexicans because at least most of them are hard working and family oriented. I'll research into Santa Fe - I'd rather live in a place with an older median age because most places with younger age groups are usually ultra liberal. Thanks for the tip.

If you are concerned about winters I would avoid WY.
Thanks for the tips. If Colorado wasn't so pozzed I would already be living there - Denver was a beautiful city the last time I visited there about 16 years ago. Wyoming is a beautiful state - Casper is nice but overall too cold in the winter for me. Utah is beautiful too but the people in SLC kind of creeped me out - a bit too friendly and religious for my tastes. Again that was 16 years ago so maybe it's changed for the better. I wish I could take 2 weeks vacation to visit the cities that I want to move to get a first hand look of how things have changed over the last few years.
Casper is ok, but it's a bit of a stretch to consider it a mountain town, lol. More Purple Sage plains. Military/Oil town. Kind of good/bad there. The Military part means you will still be seeing dark complected people in your kid's schools. The Oil part means a lot of Rouch Neck types, which tend to be on the wild side, which means Meth these days. Lot of trailerpark methoids there. There were a couple of giant kick ass surplus stores up on the north side by the pipe rigger company yards. The real deal, not these fake surplus stores selling chinese "camo tarps". Everything on up to tracked vehicles.
Follow your uncle. Family should stick together.
He moved to a real small town of under 10,000. He's retired and done with city life. I'm in my 30s & still enjoy going out to concerts & things like that.
