People think that they're taxing the mega rich, and getting a benefit... NO! That's not what happens.

Here's what happens:

  • The mega rich hide their money, and don't pay inheritance taxes.

  • The moderately successful, low-figure millionaires are the ones that have to pay inheritance taxes. And it's stupid because: A) They're being double-taxed. B) The mega rich acquire their assets.

So, in effect, inheritance tax transfers wealth to the mega rich, and big corporations. When a farmer's kids have to sell the farm to pay inheritance tax, the people on the lower end of society don't beneft. The farm is going to by scooped up by mega corporations, who will then tighten their control on society. It doesn't have a benefit to the plebs.

Thus saith the same people who don't want to give the IRS enough agents to stop wealthy tax dodgers.

Surely giving more power to the government can only end well right?

Giving more power to certain parts of the government actually can. Multibillionaires don't just avoid taxes via legal means, and if the IRS doesn't have enough agents to track through their shell corporations and money washers all that's left is to tax the rest of us. If the real purpose in starving the IRS of agency* is to reduce the government's tax income you're going about it dishonestly.

You can't oppose the REAL money without giving the IRS more power. So the end result of the game you're playing is exactly what we have now. The only question is whether you're a willing participant or a useful idiot.

*action or intervention, especially such as to produce a particular effect.

The increase in funding and ability to screw us over would just be used to shake us down harder, and regardless of where the money is coming from it's still being used against us. I have no desire to "oppose real money", as that's simply an attempt to maintain a power gap. So much of the shit that's pushed is completely unneeded for maintaining control and shaking down the masses yet it's done anyway.
