Aikido is cool, and there are some good elements to it, but usually it's not good for self-defense. It's better to study something like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sambo, or Catch Wrestling if you can find it. I usually recommend BJJ to people because the schools are easy to find, and you don't have to be strong to do it, and you learn a lot even at the white belt, and blue belt level. If you study BJJ try to get at least two stripes.
If grappling is the only tool in your toolbox, you're going to have a bad time.
Making someone submit is great, as long as your opponent doesn't have homies with them that are going to beat the shit out of you while you pretzel one guy.
