The United Nations was pushed very hard by the British empire during the war. This was a strategic objective for the empire. It was well recognized in England that the empire was quite bankrupt at the time, and was entirely dependent on donations and loans, especially from the US, in order to survive, never mind carry on a world war.
It was also recognized that the British empire was pretty much over, and that America, with her wealth and massive industrial power, would become the leading power in the world. Nothing could prevent that, but perhaps American power could be contained. The instrument for this is the United Nations.
You see, the British empire was broken up, to become the Commonwealth of Nations countries, with her colonies becoming individual nations in their own right, and each nation having an individual vote at the UN. So, whenever America tried to go to the UN to do something, the British empire had them outvoted 15 to 1. Nothing could pass that the empire did not approve. America was tricked into going along with this, as were the Russians, and the UN has been ineffective ever since.
Most Americans are unaware of this, and of the empire in general, but in the commonwealth countries, such as Canada, the empire was a much bigger deal. For example, Canadian law, to this very day, must still be approved by the Queen. There remains a contingent of empire crown loyalists in each of the Commonwealth countries. The Queen of England is also the Queen of Canada.
It is thought in some circles that now that the UK has broken from the EU, that they would move to reform the Commonwealth again, which would be a smart thing for them to do. Island nations must sail and trade. London is still possibly the world's largest financial power.
