They sold animals as to be made offerings of travelers come to worship and sacrifice, the money changers added a step and a few and consorted with those selling offerings, the selling of offerings was a pollution, the selling of anything in the temple was a great sin, the added money handling which existed only to facilitate a scam of changing money from one kind to another in the temple was beyond profane.

They were not banks but they did use the ticks of usury and fees for profit.
