Even during this insanity it’s been shown peoples behaviour responds a lot more strongly to reported case numbers, deaths etc. than government instructions. Now obviously placing such trust in the media rather than the government isn’t exactly a giant leap forward, but it does demonstrate what you say - people will respond to the perceived threat all by themselves, they don’t need diktats and don’t necessarily respond that well to them either.

I've yet to hear anyone claim that they want to take masks away from the idiots who think "science" means obeying whatever the media corporations and government agencies demand of them without question.

I simply do not want to be forced to wear something against my own will, regardless of my own bodily autonomy, and regardless of many governments' lack of authority to do so. Particularly when being harassed to do so by arrogant busybodies who know better than you because of all the fearporn they've consumed, while being unable to analyze any data, methodology, or incentive structures.
