I've seen similar quotes before and had the same question about them. Maybe they were throwing down their allied weapons because they thought that would get them superior Germans weapons quicker that way.

I think it means to crossover you’d need to throw down your weapon. The Germans would be unlikely to assume a load of heavily armed Brits closing in on them were defectors.
