I toured Virginia City Nevada last summer. I took a mine tour and the guy said the miners earned around $4 a day. The guide said there were Chinese labor using gold pans nearby but the miners wouldn't let them work the mines, because they worked for 1/10 as much. I guess the mine owners were afraid of what the American miners would do if they hired coolies.
