If I recall correctly, the British royal family owns a bunch of land and collects rent on them - but there is some kind of agreement there with the rest of the government, where the collected rent goes to the government instead, and pays to maintain the royal family.

I think it actually winds up where they are a net gain for the country. Something about like a third of the rent paid to them is in corn rents, or equivalent value, and turns out that that is like a huge revenue stream these days.

Rent seekers are just posh welfare sponges. Who produces the wealth: the tenant farmer who farms the land or the landlord who owns the land?
