At random times, and frequently, throughout the day, ask yourself "where am I and how did I get here? Am I dreaming right now?". Once it becomes a habit and you start thinking these thoughts automatically, it should spill over to your dreams as well. When you are in a dream and ask yourself "how did I get here" and "am I dreaming" you tend to realize that you are dreaming and can take control of the dream. No more nightmares.

I've heard that before and tried to use it with 0 effect.

It won't happen in a couple of days, unless you are REALLY good about picking up new habits. You basically need to be thinking about it constantly until the thoughts just happen on their own, almost like an obsession.
