A few weeks ago my little dev group had a meeting as groups do. We're scattered around the country, so it was a call-in meeting.

Group lead starts talking about how the medical insurer the company has will give you some cash back each year for doing certain things. I assume some of those are getting all the proscribed unknown injections because lead was saying they won't get the entire amount because they don't get flu shots (even though I'm pretty sure they're a jabbie.) They urged us to check our medical insurance accounts because having a few hundred dollars more during the Christmas season is always good.

I had to seriously bite my tongue and not say "So your insurer is raping so hard and so long that they can afford to give you a hush puppy and you can't focus on the fact that you're being raped - just that little bit of fat on the bone they already cleaned off and tossed in the dirt for you to gnaw on?"

But I didn't. I' m a nice person after all.

And the fact that any insurance that you are legally required to carry now has no incentive to actually cover you or make the experience pleasant. Insurance used to be somewhat cut and dry. Now you pay money to them just to fight them tooth and nail for a bullshit payout.

That's why I don't carry any insurance that I'm not required to. I used to pay for health insurance because everyone just does it. Then one day I did some quick math and realized I would save hundreds of dollars every month by paying out of pocket. It blows people's minds when I tell them I don't have health insurance or tell employers I don't want it. The most common response:

"Well, what if you have an emergency?!"

I'll go to the emergency room.

"But that's going to be extremely expensive!"

I'm not going to pay for it.

"They'll take it from your taxes or garnish your wages."

Sure... If I actually give them my information. They're required to treat me wether I give them my SSN or not. I figure if illegals get to leach off of the health care system, I will too. Plus, all said and done the insurance companies still will fight with you before they cover anything. It's a complete joke.

Edit: I take that back about not carrying insurance I'm not required to. I pay for CDL protection which, in a way is a form of insurance. If I get any traffic violations, the license protection service will appoint me a lawyer to take care of it for me. Covers the wife as well.
