A few weeks ago my little dev group had a meeting as groups do. We're scattered around the country, so it was a call-in meeting.

Group lead starts talking about how the medical insurer the company has will give you some cash back each year for doing certain things. I assume some of those are getting all the proscribed unknown injections because lead was saying they won't get the entire amount because they don't get flu shots (even though I'm pretty sure they're a jabbie.) They urged us to check our medical insurance accounts because having a few hundred dollars more during the Christmas season is always good.

I had to seriously bite my tongue and not say "So your insurer is raping so hard and so long that they can afford to give you a hush puppy and you can't focus on the fact that you're being raped - just that little bit of fat on the bone they already cleaned off and tossed in the dirt for you to gnaw on?"

But I didn't. I' m a nice person after all.

insurance is a scam period. doesnt matter what kind it is, it is a big racket. around here the government is in on it too, because if you dont have insurance, you are breaking the law. a person would be better off socking away a few extra notes for an emergency, but of course, said government has made it very hard to save money for such a problem.

And the fact that any insurance that you are legally required to carry now has no incentive to actually cover you or make the experience pleasant. Insurance used to be somewhat cut and dry. Now you pay money to them just to fight them tooth and nail for a bullshit payout.

That's why I don't carry any insurance that I'm not required to. I used to pay for health insurance because everyone just does it. Then one day I did some quick math and realized I would save hundreds of dollars every month by paying out of pocket. It blows people's minds when I tell them I don't have health insurance or tell employers I don't want it. The most common response:

"Well, what if you have an emergency?!"

I'll go to the emergency room.

"But that's going to be extremely expensive!"

I'm not going to pay for it.

"They'll take it from your taxes or garnish your wages."

Sure... If I actually give them my information. They're required to treat me wether I give them my SSN or not. I figure if illegals get to leach off of the health care system, I will too. Plus, all said and done the insurance companies still will fight with you before they cover anything. It's a complete joke.

Edit: I take that back about not carrying insurance I'm not required to. I pay for CDL protection which, in a way is a form of insurance. If I get any traffic violations, the license protection service will appoint me a lawyer to take care of it for me. Covers the wife as well.

I figured you could be self-employed by now bird

I was for a while, didn't care for it much.

It's a pretty good gig, except for one pesky detail: Gotta acquire and maintain clients. They're overrated.

[–] 3 pts

Yes. I just was never good at the hustle, it took more of my time than I liked.

Almost like a whole different type of union dues to attack the paycheck for ya... Mmm stupidly delicious.

[–] 1 pt

It is. And you don't even get anything for it. With union dues, you at least get the illusion of representation.

I just had to sit through an open enrollment seminar recently, this time of year is so much of that stuff. They must be trying to get that bonus enrollment check out for those leeches right in time for December.

What kind of premium increase are you seeing this year? We haven't had enrollment open yet, but I suspect it's going to be 10% or so.

Its called a health screening and they charge you a 25% higher premium if you don't do it because they assume you use tobacco products. I'm willing to jump through a few easy hoops if it means I get raped 25% less than stupidbird. Its not a jab at least.

I'm not sure what you're on about, but this insurer doesn't offer any kind of premium discount for anything - I don't think they even pay for the "are you going to kill yourself, here take all these pills because pills" screening that most doctors do these days. It's $1900 a year premium, $5k deductible, and $1k coinsurance. Everyone pays the same. What I'm referring to is more of a credit card cash back program - the more you spend and the more shots you get, the more they "give you back" at the end of the year.

But you're getting raped ∞ more than I am because I don't have medical insurance. My outlay this year for medical was $50 when I had to use a tele-health service for a sinus infection - that's everything, visit, amox, and out the door. That would have been well over $150 with insurance because the company's plan doesn't discount anything.
