Girl at work told me she has an unplanned doctors appointment. Something opened up, she told me yesterday morning. Swollen foot was giving her trouble and I knew she visited a doctor a few days ago because of the same thing. She would have to leave at 10:30 to make it there. "Leave in time, so you don't have to hurry." I said. "Don't worry about it", I said.

She left at around that time and left a note so I could do my due diligence. Was guessing she'd return one or two hours later. She didn't. She didn't return for the rest of the work day. "Strange", I thought. Maybe I misunderstood, maybe she had told me she wouldn't be back for the day without me realizing. Maybe the waiting room was crowded and the appointment took way longer than she expected.

Today comes around and no trace of her. She'll call and tell me she's going to be late because she overslept. She'll call and tell me she's going to be sick for a couple days until her foot gets better.

Her Mum works here too. But she's out sick with a cold since last week.

By now I figure that there's likely a bigger problem than a swollen joint.

I wait until noon and call her Mum, no connection. Call her, same thing.

Through the wonders of modern technology, after a few minutes I get a message from my phone, telling me that the party I tried to reach is now available again. Just as I'm trying to call back, my phone rings. It's the mother.

Someone found the daughter in her car yesterday. She had tried to murder herself using pills. Was touch and go there for a while but she's safe now.

Mother and daughter are in a clinic for head cases now. (I know it well because my Dad used to reside there for a while and it's location is kind of a running joke around here.)

So, never start a sentence with "So", motherfucker... How did I not catch any hint of her suicidal tendencies?

Probably would require an in depth conversation with the person.
