Printers are the dumbest machines on the planet. Even a broom makes more sense than a damn printer.

I swear they are designed to suck on purpose. Get a brother laser printer. They are the best I've found so far.

This. I’ve had my Brother monochrome laser printer for over 15 years and still works great.

I have a MFC since I needed a scanner. The printer and scanner are still working just fine, its about 10 years old at this point.

I bought knock off cartridges four years ago and just now ran out. They are 100 per color for name brand and 45 for the whole set from chinamartzon. I have printed more in those four years than in my entire life. I print stuff off just for fun and swear at all the crap I have to shred because of it.

[–] 1 pt

Absolutely. They accept 3rd party/cheap cartridge refills if you know how to reset the ink level gauge manually.

The only printer guaranteed to always work is the one at the Federal Reserve.

[–] 1 pt

I dunno. They could just say it worked and do just as much damage. Plus if the gubmint wanted to reduce the number of notes in circulation there would be nothing there to collect.

[–] 1 pt

Yeah they print your tax bill and your prison sentence.

I had an Epson Ecotank but if you don't use it that often the ink will dry in the lines from the reserve to the print head. I am back on Canon Pixma cartridges. I've been eyeballing a Brother monochrome laserprinter for the cheap shit I need to print.

I've got an Epson Stylus C88 that does what yours did. Fortunately mine clears easily if I can find the right command in the utility window.

Preach, brother! I would have given mine the "office space" treatment out in the yard a long time ago if I had something to replace it with that wasn't equally awful.

A B&W Brother laser printer is like $120 on Amazon (and comparable places.) It's good enough, and Brother drivers are some of the least shitty. Don't get an inkjet printer anymore. It's just not worth it. If you absolutely need color more than an occasional trip to Kinkos or Officemax, then get a color laser for about $300. If you are in any way tech-savy, get a raspi zero and put CUPS on it. Don't use the built in wireless on these printers, they are always a huge pain in the ass. Just use CUPS to make an easy print server and be done with it. If you need a color and laser printer both, you can serve both of them from one $25 raspi zero.

This is almost exactly what I did 12 years ago and the printer is still functioning great. The one I got is a scanner/printer with wired network port. Linux machines have no problem printing and scanning.

I burned through 8 printers in 6 months back in 2005. I was using Canon Ink jet all-in-one printers to print borderless real estate brochures. After about 20 days of heavy use, the waste ink tank full indicator was triggered (not a customer serviceable item) and it wouldn't print. Canon replaced the printers no question, I just had to return the old printers in the packaging of the new printer with their prepaid shipping. I wasn't using Canon ink either, after the original ink cartidges were empty I'd refill them with bulk ink. Since then they have chipped the ink cartidges and will not warrantee if you didn't use Canon ink. Canon's service thoroughly impressed me.

Before you ask, I was unable to find a borderless laser printer and I needed borderless ...

I prefer mimeograph machines

[–] 1 pt

Yeah man, the smell. Gestetner machines were cool as well.

Don't get me started on printers. Especially their (((drivers))).

They are expected to be disposable at this point. I have a laser beast from the early 2000s that I love but his rubber bits are starting to go. I don't know what I will replace him with. I've bought 'new' old rubber bits off eBay but they are in the same shape. I can only use the manual feed at this point. Once that goes...

See if you can 3d print the pieces in TPU. I know they won't grab the same but it may be worth a try.

[–] 0 pt

Hmmm. I'll look into it once the manual feed stops picking up. I already have to refill the toner myself because the seals are bad on 'original' cartridges. So sad. I love the beast. I even have an ancient matching scanner in classic ugly PC plastic.

Printers and their technological brethren are an amazing aspect of human culture and society, you heathen.

The implementation of software to run hardware and the delta between engineering and end user usability, however, is readily actualized in the modern day consumer printing device market.
