I have one up north still and used it frequently over the years, from my experience I definitely prefer a sit in vs a sit on. Get at least a 10.5' at the minimum, the short ones, while being lighter, are harder to paddle as they change direction much more easily making progress slower with each stroke. Find one with foam blocks on the inside, it'll greatly help stability. Look for a comfy seat snd sturdy adjustable foot pads on the inside of it, if you fish look for one that'll be easy to strap a rod to as well as cargo space for a cooler.
