Fax machines still exist. Analog phone systems and phone systems themselves still exist. We have so many more modern and clever tools and yet we still rely on some tool people have been using for almost 150 years. I plug my appliances in using the same basic plug my grandfather used while safer alternatives have existed for a long time. I knew some people whose 4 year old died unplugging a Christmas tree over 20 years ago and we still use the same plugs today. Roads are functionally the same as they have been since the 60's, people get in crashes and die constantly and the human race has come up with jack shit on how to even remotely resolve this issue, hundreds if not thousands will die tomorrow in car accidents. Same the next day and every day of the year and every year going forward. I can plug in a speaker I bought today into an amplifier from the 1970's.

We used to have statue carvers, speak like Shakespeare and build cities and arenas that would last a thousand years. There are thousand year old roads, but I've hit 3 potholes this winter. What happened to us?

What's wrong with that?

There are thousand year old roads, but I've hit 3 potholes this winter.

The "indestructable Roman road" is a myth. The only reason you still see a few exist today is because they were very lightly traveled or fell into disuse.

Roman soldiers did road repair and construction when not at war.

I know a town that has a brick street that was put in about 100 years ago. They did some maintenance to it in the 80's, but other than that, it's pretty much always been there and it's heavily travelled. Never seen a pothole on that road.

Probably because semi trucks aren't driving over it frequently.
