On a related note, why did it take so long for tapes to become advanced?
By the 1990s, we had tape players that could skip tracks and switch sides of the tape without requiring physically flipping the tape. If we had just gone straight to that then we could have entirely skipped the disastrous 8-track.
Those things could not be rewound and had zero longevity. Perhaps they had better sound quality than cassettes could hope to offer, but I didn't have the hifi equipment to compare and contrast.
