Not the first to break the speed of sound. American fighter bombers in WWII occasionally did this in steep dives. Scared the hell out of them. Yeager broke the official speed record. But he didn't create the jet, he just drove the machine. Big yawn. Hail the engineers who conceived, designed and built that rocket-plane.!

I always enjoyed reading about the dive sirens they'd use as psychological warfare.
