I never understood that line to be honest. Why isn't it better to be safe than sorry in the context of the song? What does it mean '' take on me ''? English is not my first language.

I think it means "It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't."

From what I interpret, the song basically says: "I'm leaving soon and want to have sex with you while it's still an option. You might regret not succumbing to my advances, and that regret will be greater than the regret you may feel for having had sex with me; or will be comparable."

Wow. Thanks. I get it now. I used to agree with that statement. I mean the part where you better regret something you've done than regretting not having done it. I'm not so sure anymore. Some stones are better left unturned sometimes. Thanks for the interpretation.
