I actually looked into sailboats. I’ve studied the sea and what it takes to survive there. The sea is an unforgiving bitch. It takes a real tough man to survive on the sea. Boats are demanding and require a lot of maintenance. They need a lot of shore time to keep them seaworthy. I have a huge respect for sailors. That is a tough demanding life. Aviation was more risky but a lot more fun. Hefty respect for sailors.
Read the Patrick O’Brian series of sailing novels. I was hooked and enamored with sailing. But…well read them. The movie “master and commander” doesn’t even come close to the majesty of his novels.
Sailboats require maintenance but not that much, if you do it regularly of course, if you never do it it's going to be a disaster. And of course, I'm talking about stratified boats around 30’, not 17th century wooden cathedrals
Now regarding navigation, it really depends on your location. If you take la rochelle for instance, it's pretty safe. Of course if you go at sea with bad weather conditions it's going to be horrible but you aren't supposed to do that in the first place
I live on the west coast, most of the boats are sheltered in harbors and coves. Living aboard a ship is feasible here. But slip rents are very high. The coast of California is littered with so many wrecks. I just can’t imagine sailing my home out for the day and getting rescued by the coast guard the next. I sailed yachts in college, loved it. But, I also realized just how dangerous it was. So I flew airplanes instead, lol.
I haven’t ruled out a boat homestead yet, the Sacramento River delta is a large pleasant place.
North america and americas in general yeah, you have weird shits going on with the weather, weird and ultra violent shits, such as rogue waves and fucking cyclones lol
