It has to do with the 3 different racial/ethnic groups in the country. To simplify it, northern = lighter skinned aryian blood, south = darker, east gets chinky. It is a pretty diverse place.

edt: they haven't had the caste system for a few decades, but you mention a caste system as if it is a bad thing?
