Just thought I'd share with you guys what you can earn from a local livestock auction on quail.

Quail eggs went for $9 a dozen (fertile).

The day old chicks went for $2-3/ea.

Adult birds went for $2-4 each.

As usual the price depends upon how early you put your birds/eggs in, it's first drop off, first auctioned the day of the auction. They keep brooders for chicks. Also the weather really impacts the number of people, prices were way down and hardly anyone stayed to the end last weekend, it was raining and super cold. Great way to get bargains if you're shopping.

I sold a rooster for $14. I thought that was crazy since people are trying to give the things away most of the time.

Auction here takes 20% + $1 if you want them to mail your check.

I find this to be most intriguing, and also top quality content.

Please continue to post on the happenings of the quail auctions.

I can't believe you got $14 for a rooster either. What breed was it?

Swedish flower! He was a mean bastard, too.

Saw one rooster try to attack the auction assistant through the wires, was pretty funny. That rooster went for more than mine. I guess people want mean roos to protect their flock!

Pretty birds. They are similar to Amerucanas (my favorite) where no two are alike. They are considered endangered so maybe that's why he paid you instead of you paying him to take it off your hands.

There were roosters that were no kind of breed just barnyard, and they still went from $8-20. If I had gotten there earlier the bid might've been higher. I was just glad to be rid of him xD.

I agree about how beautiful they are. His twin is still here and he's not trying to challenge everyone who comes in his path. He also doesn't abuse the hens. That rooster was definitely a "muh dick" oogabooga.

>I sold a rooster for $14.

Maybe he was an extra handsome fellow. The stud muffin of the quail scene.

These quail auctions sound lively.

They are. Week before last they had over 400 cages in the small animal side, and almost 200 on the large animal side. I left before it was done, it started at 7 and ended around midnight. It's worth going to one if you have one within an hour drive, just for the experience.

I've seen a auction at a fair it was very interesting

Shit, I'm going to start hitting up the local sale barns, especially this summer. Even with the locals knowing me and online ads, I always have extras rolling around.

Since I went, we have decided to keep an incubator going non stop and take whatever we have up there. People are really creative in how they package them, too. If you recall what my quail were in, was just a cardboard box with a little hay, and plastic mesh across the top secured with zip ties.

I saw adult turkeys with a piece of scrap plywood about the length of their bodies and chicken wire wrapped from the bottom, up, also secured with zip ties.

Some put two dollar store laundry baskets zip tied, one right side up and the other flipped upside down. I checked my local dollar tree but they didn't carry any.

I'll be toting off chicks and another rooster this week. It'll pay for at least a bag of feed!

I can imagine not wanting to spend much on a cage someone else is getting. I especially like the 2 laundry baskets.
