The most damning thing about this whole incident is the fact that our military has no capability to keep these high altitude spy balloons out of our airspace and are unable to repel them over the Pacific.
Your analysis of any destruction/retrieval process is fascinating, JohnQ. Yeah, no way a helicopter could handle that - not to mention the risk to people on the ground if it ended up over a populated area. Yes - it could be used for a myriad of reasons - thing is - how would we know? And, not knowing, what might result from interventions? If this happened on Trump's watch they'd already be holding impeachment hearings for failure to protect his country.

I have more questions than answers here.
You and me both.
HI Pod. I guess they waited long enough for the balloon to travel near the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina over the Atlantic, then sent up a couple F22s that have a maximum service ceiling of 65,000 feet where one F22 had to launch a missile to more than puncture it LOL. Military said that the balloon had over its course dropped down from 114,000 feet to 66,000 feet when they shot it down. Sad thing is that this operation probably cost the taxpayer about $35,000 dollars in jet fuel for two F22s in addition to all the fuel for Naval vessels that were sent to the debris site and that the one missile used likely cost a cool million dollars. We should send an invoice due in 30 days to the ChiComs for recovery and disposal of their balloon. Trump would do it LOL.
Thanks for the explanation.

For sure he would - lol - and then threaten to deduct it from Joe's "Chyna pay."
LOL :)
