My guess has been that the lurkers here are interested in learning the truth about topics that are taboo in the corporate media, but they are afraid that they will be "outed" at some future point (an eventuality that is not unlikely) and so embrace discretion as the better part, or at least the easier part, of valor.

That's good to hear! I lurk elsewhere 100%. I have tried to participate here when I have time and relevant information or thoughts.
I tell people not to underestimate their reach because those of us who lurk are still part of the process. We may not post but we will talk to people, and maybe connect dogs from other sources. It's a balance between free speech, anonymity, and sometimes just using the tech or format, and even learning how culture and context work in some forums... At least for me.
