This is misleading. They mostly talk about plasma, which most donors get paid to donate. Lots of people donate plasma twice a week to supplement income. There is also red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets collections. Both of those are on critical shortages and are usually a volunteer donation (not paid). Platelets only have a shelf life of 7 days and one of those days is sucked up with testing.
If you donate, donate to a local blood collection center where the blood will stay at local hospitals. The local blood centers will advertise which hospitals they serve in the community or you can ask your local hospital where they get RBCs and platelets from.
Edit: I should mention that you Can actually donate for yourself. If you have a procedure coming up and know which local blood center provides the blood, you can arrange to donate for yourself. Friends and family can also donate for you (assuming compatible blood type). So if you have a procedure and worried about vaxxed blood, donate for yourself.
Yes there are paid donations, but most blood drives are not getting paid. And you cannot elect to donate Plasma, Red Blood Cells or Platelets, only Blood, which is then separated.
