If he was mentally ill (yes) and is a danger to society, he belongs in an institution for the criminally insane.

It's prison but for severely mentally ill people.

HOWEVER....

Why is it not okay to destroy a person like this? I know that seems callused, but we'd destroy a violent dog that could not be properly housed with dogs or humans. So why don't we do that for extremely violent and insane humans?

If anything "mental illness" should be cause for a harsher punishment as it means no chance of rehab.
