I've always been told that in a pile up your best bet is to abandon the car and run up the nearest hill as soon as you can. If no hill is available just get as far away from the road as possible. Most passenger vehicles simply can't withstand the impact of a 80k lbs semi colliding with it at speed. You never know when a truck full of bricks or a gas truck is going to plow into the back of your vehicle pinning you in the vehicle while it turns to a flaming mess.

Since I've never had a car that was particularly new, I always keep a breakdown kit in the car so I can spend the night. In the winter this includes a spare jacket a blanket and some other stuff. This stuff stays in the trunk or pickup bed. I've always wondered how things would turn out if I was forced to abandon the vehicle because of a snowy pileup like this and then had to spend the night due to delayed rescue.
