You make a good point re: euthanasia. I've seen family die of cancer and it was ugly. Pain has upper limits of which we can hardly imagine, until it happens to us. I've also mercy-killed animals who were badly injured. Perhaps I would choose it for myself if I was put in that situation. Not for me to say.
I think in this case, the patients and/or their families weren't given a choice. It was just done, sneakily, like you said. Medical malpractice was ~3rd leading cause of death before covid. I wouldn't want some burnt-out nurse practitioner make that call on me. Or insurance review board.
Our society lacks the maturity and most of all the masculinity to have these deep conversations.
