Wouldn't a cold climate like that be expect to reduce the life of the battery?

Obviously.

So he's pretty much an idiot for buying an electric car.

Most people that buy them, yes.

If you look closely next time one drives past you. The driver will have a mask on.

Pretty much. Although, I would argue that not having to drive is a good reason to get one. Most people who cause accidents do so because they've stopped paying attention to the road for one reason or another, like kids who text while they're driving. A programmed vehicle, which is designed to get from point A to point B, has no line of code for getting distracted. Vehicles that drive themselves, has backwards as this may be to hear (because people spin against Elon), are far, far safer for vehicular travel than most people who drive. The biggest reason for me wanting a Tesla (multiple, actually), beyond using them for income, is not having to drive and being much safer (the car has a much faster reaction time than me). If someone tells you Teslas are dangerous, laugh in their face and call them stupid.
