There is not much to burn in DC. So much stone. As black as it is, I suspect it involves diesel fuel. I could not find any thing on the traffic cams, but I was probably an hour or two after the incident. I was dark when I looked.

For what it’s worth, most structure fires give off black smoke when actively burning.

I know, but DC is different. Everything is stone. There isn't squat to burn besides the furniture.

Roger that.

Article says black smoke is an indicator of heavy fuels or man-made products (plastics, vinyls, furniture and so forth). I mean, it could be diesel fuel but most likely synthetics. Not a firefighter or anything, I have just seen a few homes in my area burn over the years, they always start gray and then go to heavy black smoke. When the fire trucks hit it with water it goes light gray/white.
