Now, if you did this same type research as a Random Control Trial, which would be unethical (because you're looking to see how dies more often and the random control part of it means you're aware that the control group and study groups will have deaths), yeah, you'd have solid data to support a claim that they are causing deaths. Since we can't do that type of research, we have to stick with what is called retrospective studies which just simply looks at all the data over a period of time and compares 2 different periods of time, no controls, not study groups, etc. Just the raw data among the whole population with about 2 variables. We can do multivariate analysis if we collect data on the population in the retrospectives (chi square) like BMI, age, gender, etc.
