It was a political hot potato ever since Reagan sent in the CIA to support the Mujahadin and Osama Bin Laden in their "freedom fight" against the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

Whoever got stuck when the musical chairs ended was going to look bad. It could have been W, it could have been Obama, it could have been Trump, it could have been Biden. They just kicked the can down the road. There was never going to be any stability there.
