Yup, isn't the A-10 the most heavily (conventionally) armed aircraft? I remember the Eisenhower Interstate system was built with aircraft landings in mind. Many sections of the road have large straight-aways capable of a commercial plane to land.

They took a 20mm Gatling gun, and built a plane around it.
That's what I remembered.
This aircraft was specifically designed for this and off field operations.
I know they did some of this stuff during the 50s. But largely in anticipation of European operation.
