MY EXPERIENCE WITH NURSING HOME PROCEDURES AND THE HIGH COVID DEATH COUNT
IN the past thirty years I have visited Nursing Homes with friends and relatives there for a number of reasons. Some are purely for specialized care involving healing and others are comfort care at the end of life events. It is my experience that in the past when a Nursing Home patient was found to have unusual or threatening situations outside of the normal nursing care, i.e Medicines, Nutrition, Rehab and Exercise and Progress Evaluations, these patients were sent to the hospital for the detailed testing, evaluation and care available there. I saw this 100% of the time as a standard protocol. Obvious end of life situations saw patients going home or to a Hospice Care facility. During times of the seasonal flu where patients in Nursing Homes suffered massive aches and pains, fever, vomiting etc., they were 100% moved to a hospital.
Enter the Covid-19 dynamic of a Pandemic. A Pandemic is usually declared when a virus or disease will overwhelm the medical system of a region and possibly the world. That is why we saw the panic by officials and hospitals to expand or designate hospital bed counts for strictly Covid-19 patients. We saw tent hospitals deployed and hospital ships moved to potential hot spots all because it was perceived that Covid-19 would overwhelm those medical facilities already serving a region.
To facilitate the expansion and designation of dedicated Covid-19 hospital beds, it became a policy or mandate that Nursing Home patients would no longer be allowed to to be transferred from the Nursing Home to a hospital, and so thousands of them died their natural death or from the complications of the flu and other threatening situations in the Nursing Home and not as a usual death in a hospital.
Did those Nursing Home patients, denied hospital care, get the care they needed? Not at all. The policy of not allowing Nursing Home patients hospital care caused the number of Nursing Home deaths to skyrocket and then it was inflated even more when nearly all death from all reasons were deemed death from Covid-19.
Bottom Line - To many people died in Nursing Homes because the were denied proper medical care and were quarantined inside of a cesspool of Covid-19/Flu/Cold etc. that attacked their body's systems. I never saw a Nursing Home that had the facilities, staff and training to care for critically ill patients. Those patients trapped inside of the locked down Nursing Homes might as well have been in a third world clinic. The Nursing Homes were the overwhelmed medical facility so many worried about. They were unprepared, under staffed and under trained for the patient numbers and care required.
Was it intentional? Was it ignorant and stupid management of a medical emergency?
